city was founded on the 10th of April, 1760 on the Izh river as a
settlement attached to the Iron producing Works belonging to Earl
Shuvalov.
10 June, 1807 is a date of the second birth of Izhevsk when an outstanding miner engineer and talanted organizer of production A.F. Deryabin founded a small arms factory. Since the new enterprise was well-equipped in accordance with world level, Deryabin suggested that the obsoleted Tula Works should have been closed. Since 1867 Izhevsk was officially considered to be a settlement which was divided by its river into Nagornaya and Zarechnaya parts. On the 10th of June, 1921 the center of Udmurt autonomy was transferred from Glazov to Izhevsk against opinions of some Udmurt leaders. Having been renamedfrom autonomos district to the UASSR on the 28th of December, 1934, the city obtained status of capitalof the UASSR. Izhevsk is located in the central part of Republic Udmurtia and ocupies an area of 31,166 ha. A motor road links the city with the port "Sarapul" situated on the bank of the Kama river (its length is 67 km), a railway links it with the main railway junction : Baberino station (168 km) and Agryz station (33 km). The Izhevsk airport accepts air-planes from than 20 towns of Russia and the CIS. It takes 1 hour 45 minutes to go by plane from Izhevsk to Moscow and 24 hours to go to Moscow by train.

Izhevsk is a high-developed industrial center. 49 major industrial enterprises are located here. According to output and assortiment of the goods produced, the city takes one of the leading places in the Ural region.
Intensification of conversion allows to increase annually the assortiment of consumer goods. The highest technical level of the military-oriented enterprises and well-educated staffs provide high quality of the goods produced by Izhevsk Works.

center of the Republic. A number of institutes of Ural department
of Academy of Science of the Russian Federation is available in
Izhevsk, such as phisical and technical, economy, applied
mechanics, Institute of History, Language and Literature of
Udmurtia. Major higher education institutes are located in
Izhevsk: State Udmurt University, Izhevsk Technical Institute,
Agricultural and Medical Institutes. In fact, all the institutes
of higher education in the Republic admit foreign students
providing high level of knowledge of the future specialists.
here are 92 schools providing general education in
Izhevsk with more than 90 thousands of schoolchildren. Besides,
there is a net of technical secondary schools, specialized
schools and colleges with bias whichleads to medical, musical,
teaching and some other specialities.
he following figures tell us about the cultural life
of the capital. There are 5 theaters, 25 libraries, 12 art
schools for children, 9 cinemas, 2 parks and summer gardens, 18
clubs and Palaces of Culture including Ice Palace belonging to
the Industrial Enterprise "Izhstal", 2 Municipal
museums.
he Izhevsk pond (its area is 22 sq.km) is a favourite
place of recreation for the town people. 20 hotels are available
in the city. There are 105 monuments of architecture, history and
culture in the capital of Udmurtia.
